Do you shudder when you receive an e-mail with the subject line "FOI Request"? Maybe it's the first FOI request you've ever dealt with and you don't know where to even begin? And what about data protection? Are you sure all the personal and confidential information your council holds is secure? What about your councillors – are they also aware of their data protection responsibilities? It is easy to become frightened of FOI and data protection and put it to one side in the "too difficult" pile, but as the council's Information Officer all Clerks have a statutory duty to have a working knowledge of the rules and be able to apply them. Help is at hand! Northants CALC has commissioned an expert in the field who will show you how to deal with requests for information, how to apply exemptions and exceptions and when it matters which legislation you use. The trainer will also take you through how to deal with vexatious requests, and practical exercises will help you to gain confidence and knowledge when faced with tricky requests. There will also be an overview of the proposed changes to data protection which will become the Data Protection Act 2018.

Topics covered during the course will include

  • What is personal data?
  • The "six principles of data protection"
  • Data security
  • The Freedom of Information Act ten years on
  • Exemptions and how to apply them
  • Vexatious requests

The tutor is a solicitor who has been involved with Freedom of Information since the beginning and has had responsibility for compliance with information legislation at both district and unitary councils.

This course is aimed at Clerks to all sizes of council and will also be useful for councillors who need to know the compliance standards expected of parish and town councils.
