Northamptonshire County Association of Local Councils is a not for profit membership organisation, representing, training and advising the parish and town councils of Northamptonshire, who form the grass roots tier of local government in England.

We offer members a resource of vital, operational information and facilitate communication at all levels of the parish network - district, county, regional and national.

As a membership association we are unable to deal with queries from the public, but we are happy to make general information available through this website.

9 Top Reasons to Stand For Election - #2

9 Top Reasons to Stand For Election - #2

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 05:00 by Danny Moody

Are you thinking of standing to be a parish or town councillor in the elections on 7 May 2015?

The deadline to submit your nomination papers is 4pm on Thursday 9 April 2015.

Between now and the deadline we'll be looking at Nine Top Reasons to Stand for Election.

Number 2 - Look Out for Your Community

As American comedienne Lily Tomlin put it: "I said "Somebody should do something about that." Then

I realized I am somebody." More »

No one will care for and look after a community as much as the people that live there. If the

local playground needs sorting out, if there's a dog pooh problem, if the community needs a new

meeting place, no one is going to help unless the community is prepared to help itself.

That's where the parish or town council comes in. A band of dedicated communitarians looking out

for the community and putting its interests first. It might be that the community's needs can be

addressed directly by the parish or town council, or it might be a case of highlighting the need

to the district or county council. The parish or town council will be on the case, making sure

things happen.

And you can be part of that. Perhaps you have a vision that you would like to make reality.

perhaps you have a single agenda that you wish to push. Whatever your motivation, being a parish

or town councillor gives you the opportunity to show how much you care about where you live.

So go on, give it a go. You'll be very glad you did!

If you live in Northamptonshire you'll find the contact details for all parish and town councils here. Get in touch with the Clerk and they will tell you how you can stand for election. » Less

Number 1 - Give Something Back

Being a parish or town councillor is an opportunity to give something back. Maybe you've lived in a community for many years and have enjoyed making the most of all it had to offer but were always a little bit too busy to give anything back. Understandable with the demands of kids, work... life! More »

But now you are at a stage in your life where you have a little bit of spare time (and energy!) to give something back. Perhaps your demanding job has settled down a bit, perhaps the kids have recently left home.

Standing for election to be a parish or town councillor will give you a chance to make a difference in your local community. It's your turn to put in rather than take out. It's your turn to put your hand up and to shoulder some of the responsibility for making the community a great place to live.

Giving something back can be tremendously rewarding and fulfilling too. You'll find that the more you give the more fulfilled you will feel. In fact, you may wonder why you didn't find the time to be a councillor before!

If you have just an hour or two a week to give then please consider standing for election. You'll be very glad you did!
